Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit
Georgia Theatre – Athens, GA September 8, 2011
I was fortunate enough to catch Bright Eyes for a second time this year with the most recent being at the rebuilt and renovated Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA. This being my first visit to the venue I was really impressed by the intimate feel and was ecstatic that I was only a few feet away from the stage AND Conor Oberst. Bright Eyes put on an amazing live performance with not one dull moment. I have complete respect for the amazing musician Conor Oberst is and I admire the passion he has for his music. As a musician, singer, and songwriter Conor Oberst takes full ownership of every line that he sings and he writes with meaning and purpose even when the topics vastly range from love, hate, death, and politics. The show took a crazy turn when Oberst decided to stage dive and the crowd went into a frenzy. I haven’t even mentioned the fact that he pulled a fan on stage to sing the entire song ‘The Calendar Hung Itself” off ‘Fever and Mirrors’. Imagine the wonder and excitement that she was feeling. It was an amazing moment and an even more amazing night!
First Aid Kit was the opening act and I am so enthralled with these Swedish sisters and musicians. They mix acoustic folk sounds with perfect harmonies and the product is nothing short of beautiful. Don’t let their sweet sound blind you before really listening to the lyrics you will then discover some sensitive topics including religion or the lack of faith. I can respect the honesty in their music and pure sound that they create. I have been enjoying their recordings and was very pleased to see that they perform together magically live. First Aid Kit will be releasing a new album titled “The Lion’s Roar” in early 2012 which is produced by Bright Eyes very own Mike Mogis. Give them a listen, I dare you not to fall in love. First Aid Kit will be touring with Lykke Li this winter so catch them live too!
