Over the Sun and Under the Radar

Jungol, The Zou, NovaKord
529 Venue – 8.22.11

This past week was huge for Atlanta music and it was encouraging to see so many people out supporting the scene.  Jungol, an experimental rock trio, has been a part of local Atlanta music for many years but unfortunately I have only known about them since this year.  Just finishing up an east coast tour, Jungol arrived in Atlanta to a warm welcome home last Monday at 529.  The venue was unbelievably packed once they hit the stage and by the end of their lively set I knew exactly why.  It just goes to show how important touring is and I felt like their set was well rounded and focused yet completely surreal.  This is the type of band that has the ability to take you to a place where your dreams are reality and your worries are minimal. Although the music is synth infused, I was blown away by their refined musical talent including rapid drum beats and grungy guitars that awaken your senses.  Check out Jungol next time they tour near you and stream their newest album “Over The Sun and Under the Radar” over on their website.

The Zou, from Youngstown, Ohio, was Jungol’s direct support on their east coast tour.  I really enjoyed their energetic set full of strong vocals and keys (times two) perfectly placed throughout their tunes.  The Zou seem to really enjoy the music they play and it was an extra treat when the Yoder brothers from Jungol joined them on stage for a song.

NovaKord is an electronic rock band from Atlanta, which I haven’t heard before seeing them play this show.  I absolutely loved their set and was so grateful that I got to 529 early to see them play.  As soon as lead vocalist Wes Daniel sang his first note I knew this band was going to be a must see. I couldn’t believe what an amazing voice he had and the whole band was on point.  A very smart move by NovaKord was to hand out free music to basically everybody in the building. It may have only been one song on the disc titled “Out There” but it hasn’t left my car CD player.  Catch this band live if you are in Atlanta! Side note: Go to shows early and watch the opening bands!  I can’t explain how special it is to hear live music from musicians who take the time to play, so take the time to show them some love. You never know when you will find an outstanding band that you weren’t expecting to see.
