Band & Show Review
Dead Confederate is one of my favorite alt-grunge-rock bands to emerge from the south and I am honored to know these guys and their music. So far I have seen Dead Confederate live about 10 times in about 8 different venues and it never gets old seeing them brace the stage. I would call seeing them play live an experience. Their music is dark and heavy and the bright lights sit on the stage floor and shine forward into the crowd so all you can see is their silhouettes. You wouldn’t think any of this mattered but it does. It’s the perfect setting to showcase their ability as musicians and also aids in conveying the songs that they play. Every single one of the guys in Dead Confederate are really passionate about what they do and they have such great chemistry that their shows are almost flawless. I say almost flawless because music isn’t meant to be perfect and imperfection shows that they are human just like the rest of us. I encourage anyone young and old who hasn’t seen Dead Confederate live to do so, you won’t be disappointed.
40 Watt Club – Athens, GA – 01.21.11
I have only seen Dead Confederate play in Atlanta and decided I needed to see them play in Athens where the band resides. I knew that the scene would be different because of Athens being a college town and I also wanted to see them in a venue I have never seen them play before. I have to say that I really fell in love with the 40 Watt. It is a very intimate venue and very cozy. I mean there was a couch in the middle of the venue!
Dead Confederate released their second album ‘Sugar’ last August and it quickly became one of my favorite albums as well. The title track from the record Sugar is one of my favorite songs and I was more than ecstatic that they played it at the 40 Watt. They played a good mixture of new and old songs including their most popular song ‘The Rat’. They have probably played that song hundreds of time and Hardy forgot the lyrics while singing the second verse while the rest of the guys just kept playing. It was a rare moment and made me smile. They rounded out the night with a Neil Young cover and it was a perfect way to end. It was great seeing them play in a new (to me) venue. I really enjoyed it and I hope I can top last year and see Dead Confederate even more this year.
Here is a video of DC playing The Rat at the 40 Watt.
