Variety Playhouse – 8.3.11
Variety Playhouse was packed eagerly awaiting to see the lovely ladies grace the colorful stage. It was so inspiring to see such a strong line up of multinational female vocalists and musicians.
Sia is one singer I knew my life wouldn’t be complete until I saw live. I would even say that she is a living legend and there was no way I was going to miss seeing her perform. This tour is said to be her last and it is saddening because how much raw talent she has and the world needs to just take a minute to hear her sing and they would be hooked. I loved every second of this set from Sia, her amazing band supporting her, the colorful quilted stage, and even her over the top outfit. It seemed that a lot of the audience was there just to hear Sia talk because her cute Australian accent and commentary were hilarious. Sia talked to the crowd like we were her close friends even calling out to the young fans in the audience and asking for their names. By the end of her set she even said bye to the kids. How cool is that! I haven’t even talked about the music yet. I have been a die hard fan of Sia because of her more heart wrenching songs like “I’m in Here” and “Soon We’ll be Found”. She has vocals like no other and the ability to write the most impeccable lyrics. It was crazy to see her laughing one minute while she was talking to the crowd and then get so taken over by the song she was singing the next. When she sang “Breathe Me” even the simple exhale she took before she started to sing was so powerful and gave me chills. Another song I was hoping she would sing was her powerful rendition of Madonna’s “Oh Father”, which is one of my favorite songs off of Sia’s latest album ‘We are Born’. It just seems impossible to have such flawless vocals that are so moving and full of pure emotion but Sia embodies just that.

Oh Land is a Danish singer and also an actress. The stage was set with balloons that spelled out the words “Oh Land” and a keyboardist and drummer wearing masks on their faces. I knew I was in for an interesting performance. Moments later Oh Land walked on stage with a unicorn-like crown on her head. The theatrics didn’t take away from her performance and it was magical. Oh Land has a different style than most female singers out there however she can sing comparably even better. Something I was not expecting was her incomparable stage presence with dance moves all her own that seemed to captivate the audience and even some hip hop swagger during some of the songs. The crowd went wild when the band started playing Oh Land’s most popular tune “Sun Of a Gun”, which currently has 12 Million views on YouTube.
Ximena Sariñana a singer/songwriter and actress from Mexico was first on stage accompanied by her brother. Ximena was a breath of fresh air with her contemporary pop sound and playful melodies on the keys. The most powerful moments were when she sang in Spanish; it seemed to be most natural and even though I couldn’t understand a word I could still feel the emotion in every note. Check out her performance on The Tonight Show that aired Wednesday, August 10th.
