Bad Books – Masquerade – October 19, 2012 |
October 15-21, 2012
The show Tuesday at the Earl was one of the best post-metal/rock shows I have been to this year. It included performances by Dropout, Co-Pilot, Alaskan, and Irreversible. I was looking forward to seeing Irreversible for months now because the last time I saw them was all the way back in April. I made sure to be front and center of the band so I could feed off their energy. Irreversible’s music is forceful and gut wrenching, filled with screeching guitars and vigorous drum patterns. Each kick of the drum made up for not having a bass player and their keys player sacrificed his synth at the end of the show proving the intensity of their music. I almost lost it when they played “Prime”, for some indescribable reason I am so connected to that song. Irreversible doesn’t disappoint and they treated the crowd to songs from their older releases as well as their EP Ashes that was released in April. They also played even newer material and announced that they are releasing two, yes TWO, EPs this December alongside playing a release show at The Earl on December 20th. I highly recommend seeing Irreversible live as it will change your life.
I slowly regained my hearing by Wednesday just in time to see Dark Dark Dark, Emily Wells, and Christ, Lord at 529. Christ, Lord successfully brought all of their friends and fans out to the show. Emily Wells put on an incredible one-woman show that included live looping of her gorgeous vocals and violin playing. This was my second time seeing Dark Dark Dark this year and they were really great. Each member of the band has such a composed and calming presence on stage. They are all so talented and their music is meant to be heard live.
It was an off-night as far as sound goes at Star Bar on Thursday. However, Beitthemeans, T. Hardy Morris & The Outfit, and Death on Two Wheels put on great performances. I unfortunately only witnessed a couple of songs by Death on Two Wheels because they started super late. They are one of the best high energy rock and roll bands from Atlanta. I’ve seen them all over the city and no matter where or when, they always put on such a great show. Also, it was so encouraging to see so many Atlanta musicians at the show that night. Atlanta has such a supportive music community. I absolutely love it.
Despite the horrible parking situation, that also caused me to miss Harrison Hudson, it was a good night for music at the Masquerade on Friday. Bad Books played a great set but I wasn’t expecting anything less. Bad Books is a collaboration between members of Atlanta band Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine. They recently released a sophomore album, titled II, and I was so excited to hear many songs from that album live. They also played songs from their first self-titled release. Atlanta was also treated to Andy Hull and Kevin Devine singing “Where Have You Been”, which is one of my all time favorite Manchester Orchestra songs. They both expressed their gratitude to the crowd and it shows how humble these talented musicians are. I have a lot of love for Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine and I can’t wait for the third annual Stuffing in November where I get to see them all play again!
I have such a diverse taste in music but I wouldn’t have it any other way! I took the weekend off from shows to spend time with family. It is nice to take a break though and I’ll be back next week for more!
