Psychedubasaurus REX – 8 Track – Album Review/Interview

Psychedubasaurus REX
8 Track
Released: June 15, 2012

Psychedubasaurus REX is a super group of talented  Atlanta musicians.  Travel through space and time with their latest offering 8 Track.  My absolute favorite track is “Swamp of Wyrms”.  I feel like I’m being transcended in and out of the atmosphere while the music grows and fades.  I love that the music started out as jam sessions and it turned into 8 tracks of pure psychedelic magic.  Listen to the album below before its Friday release!  I wanted to know more about all things Psychedubasaurus REX so I asked band member Bret Phillips a few questions (read after the jump).
Psychedubasaurus REX is playing this Friday, June 15, at The 5 Spot and you don’t want to miss it.  The musicians you will see on stage are from some of the best bands in town; Odist, Jack of Hearts, Jungol, Hello Cobra, Sneaky Hand, Lotus Quadrant, and more!   Even if you have seen them live before, each performance is different and incredible.  More information can be found HERE.

Describe what the recording process was like for 8 Track? Do you record live full band or parts individually?

Last summer the four of us got together for an afternoon jam and recorded the whole thing. The four on the album are Jerad Hill (Hello Cobra), Parker Newell (Odist), David Carter (Lotus Quadrant), and Bret Phillips (Lotus Quadrant).  We sifted through about 2 total hours of audio, two one hour long jams, and pulled what we thought were the highlights out. Each song was stripped right out of the middle of the jams, so the challenge was finding the rights spots to start and or end each of the songs. David Carter did most of the editing as well as the artwork, I did the mixing and mastering. 99% of what you hear was recorded live all at once. We only added a few FX at the beginnings of the tracks to make them flow a bit better.

As a collective of Atlanta musicians, I know the lineup is ever evolving for Psychedubasaurus REX. Who will be playing at the show Friday?

So far we have a pretty amazing crew confirmed to come out. It’s going to be percussion city on stage. Not everyone will be playing at once but we have a good set length and will be rotating around as we do.

Jason Monsuer – drums/percussion
Sarah Wilson – drums/percussion
Jesse Bone – drums/percussion
Kace Brennan – drums/percussion
Jerad Hill – drums/percussion
Matt Maher – vocals/percussion
David Carter – guitar
Parker Newell – guitar
Graham Yoder – guitar
Brett Reagan – guitar
Bret Phillips – bass
Adam Kriske – keys

Planning to beg and plead Mr. Mike Dillon to jam with us, as well as his trombone player Carly Meyers, she’s incredible.

How would you describe your live show to someone who hasn’t seen Psychedubasaurus REX before? Should we expect any surprises?

Live improv music that bends and blends genres played by some of Atlanta’s most talented musicians. It’s certainly a ‘musicians’ kind of band, but if you like heavy rhythms, grooving, and shaking your ass, you’ll like the dubasaurus.

If you’ve never seen the PSDREX with a vocal guest, then you are certainly in for a surprise!

Anything else you would like to talk about?

I would like to take this opportunity to give a shout out to my own band Lotus Quadrant. We are releasing our second studio song in just a couple of weeks, and we will be playing our first Atlanta show in July. Details on the show being worked out now.

Hijacking Music Festival is being planned and organized for Fall 2012. It’s going to be held at 529 this year. We’ve got the date locked in, confirming the bands and getting all the puzzle pieces together.
